ENO - The Lion Sleeps Tonight/Seven Deadly Finns Was Trash Records (USA?) WR 101 stVG++/NM 15
   (Bootleg 45 with two non-lp sides that didn't get released in USA. TLST is an "Another Green
    World" outtake, and SDF is a tweaked guitar-rocker, as though Eno had done his Roxy "treatments" to Cheap Trick.)
FACTORY - End Of Night/                                Cobra (FRA) COB 47001          @VG++/@VG++ 10
   (1977. Proggish mainstream rock, keyboard-led, with strong, VERY David Gilmour sounding guitar
    leads. Flip's more heavy/boogie in nature, with a clean, glossy production that weakens it.)
MEDUSA CYCLONE EP Third Gear Rec.s (no #) NM/NM 6
  (1997, Michigan. LTD: 1000. Freakout-psych/spacemoo that occasionally comes back to earth from
   planet of the krautrockers to play an atmospheric, shoegaze-y, flowerpsych SONG. But not often.
   Very cool.)
RE-DUO (CHRIS CUTLER/FRED FRITH) - Limoges I/II        Re (UK) no #                         NM/NM 10
   (Recorded live in 1979, issued in 1983. There was a mail-order-only clear vinyl pressing of 250
    copies, and there is this second pressing, which is on black vinyl. Guitar/percussion free-
    improv, it is pretty damn noisy. On b-side, they add a piano and get into a This Heat kinda
    groove.)
SCENIC/LANTERNA - Live Recordings (2x7")               Independent Project Records IP 058  NM/NEW  6
  (Scenic are ex-Savage Republic, Lanterna is from Illinois. Live recordings from 1996 tour. Both
   bands have the 'imaginary soundtracks' thing happening, and BOTH of them, on this record, remind
   me a powerful lot of Popol Vuh. Maybe it's just me. LTD 1500.)

ON LP
AIRBRIDGE - Paradise Moves Carve Up (UK) CU3 NM/NM 20
   (1982. Dramatic and stylish early-seventies style prog in the pastoral/melodic mode, infrequent
    eighties-rock touches (one song, I think). Some similarity to Genesis and bands of that ilk,
    but not blatantly derivative. Majestic, soaring instro passages & lead guitar work, nice mel-
    odic sense.)
AMBROS/TAUCHEN/PROKOPETZ - Der Watzmann Ruft           Bellophon (GER) BLPS 3301        VG+/@VG++ 15
  (1974 German oddity: 'rock opera' consisting of long stretches of spoken dialogue, punctuated
   with songs. Half the music is symphonic prog, somewhat spare and dry in texture but dignified
   and seductive... and half is a sophisticated, well-played version of beat pop, sometimes boogie-
   ish and sometimes tending toward oompah.)
RON ANDERSON - Fever Dream Tragic Mule TR 520816 NM/NM 15
   (1987. Guitar/synth guy + reed section + female vocalist. Out sound in a chamber-prog/post RIO
    mode. A lot of bands in this style race from one idea to the next one so fast that nothing has
    a chance to sink in; these guys take their time and explore each idea thoroughly before moving
    on. Record is 15 years old already, and it's could easily be a major prog rarity one of these
    days. GOOD one. Oh, Ron used to play with noise-new-york band RAT AT RAT R.)
ANGE - Caricatures                           Phillips (FRA) 6325 181                   VG++/VG++  20
   (1972, first LP. Not yet completely immersed in the symphonic/pastoral style; this'n has a lot
    in common with heavy psych a la Deep Purple -- powerhouse organ riffing, burning guitar-leads
    in a powerpsych mode... plus lots of experimental trippy bits. Far and away my favorite of
    their records because IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE GENESIS.)
ANGE - Au-Dela Du Delire                            Philips (FRA) 9101 004              NM--/NM-- 20
   (1974. Darn those pastoral-prog cliches! Darn that ol dumb ol Genesis! A hasty first listen
    showed this one to be more predictable and more in the familiar medievalist/pastoral style
    than their first record, but they do still have some unique things oftheir own going on. At
    the very least, it's better than 95% of the other Foxtrot clones out there. Strong record in
    spite of (itself). With insert. On the other hand, reviewers at Gnosis say this is their best
    album, so fuck me, what do I know?)
ANGE - Emile Jacotey                                Philips (FRA) 9101 012          stVG++/stVG++ 20
    (1975, Side one alternates between symphonic-prog and heavy-guitar-rock, with only a few short
     passages that show much personality at all. Side two is a good deal more interesting.)
ANGE - Tome VI (2LP)                                Philips (FRA) 6641 715             VG++/NM/NM 25
   (1976, live album. Prog/proglite with the power-chord dynamism of arena-rock. Lots of pomp/
    symphonic-prog highlights, and one ferocious guitar-rocker on side three.)
ANOTHER ROADSIDE ATTRACTION - S/T                   ARA (CAN) no #                      VG++/VG++ 65
   (1979. Mundane AOR songwriting with uber-flashy dual-keyboard symphonic-prog style solo
    twiddling. Sorta like when Rick Wakeman guested on that Kansas album, you remember that?)
ARK ANGEL - S/T                                     Joyeuse Garde JGR 001             stVG++/NM-- 60
  (1980, Texas. Christian prog, produced by JIMMY HOTZ. A-side is UK-ish pastoral/medievalist
   lyricism, B-side more electrified, dynamic, exciting. Hard-rock moves, lead guitar, fuzz...
   With insert.)
HECTOR AVONDO - S/T                                 CBS (ARG) 20417                      NM-/NM-  20
   (1983. Chamberpop? Folk-prog? It's got electric guitar sometimes and drums sometimes, but
    rock & roll is 2000 miles away. Remotely like John Martyn, Richard Thompson, etc...)
BABE RUTH - Amar Caballero Harvest (UK) SHUL 812 NM--/NM-- 20
  (1974. Strange mix ... schitzy even... of fusion/funk and delicate, semi-acoustic pastoral prog.
   Flutes, violins, f. vocals, lots of acoustic guitar, spanish & afro-caribbean touches... and
   then back to the funky stuff.)
BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST - Everyone Is Everybody Else Polydor (UK) ACB 00216 stVG+/stVG++ 7
         - Time Honored Ghosts ('75)                Polydor (UK) 2383 361                VG++/VG+  6
         - Octoberon ('76)                          Polydor (UK) 2442 144               VG++/VG++  7
PETE BARDENS - Seen One Earth Cinema (Capitol) ST 12555 stVG++/NM 5
  (1987. Artful, flowing keyboard-led instro.s from the heart of the prog-ist mainstream.)
DAVID BEDFORD - Instructions For Angels Virgin (UK) V2090 NM/NM 15
   (1977 symphonic-prog, 40-minute theme & variations suite for orchestra + keyboards + keyboards +
    keyboards + keyboards. Mike Oldfield solos at length on one track. Analog synth sound dates it
    some, but good for people who dig the baroque/classical-flavored & early-music/celtic-influences
    style of prog, you know what I'm sayin'?)
FRANCOIS BERANGER - Le Monde Bouge Escargot (FRA) ESC 323 VG+/NM-- 7
   (1974. Seventies-styled wah-wah AOR/rock-pop that occasionally takes on some pomp/prog moves. J
    P ALARCEN on guitar. Sung in french, has insert.)
PETER BLEGVAD - The Naked Shakespeare               Virgin (GER) 205 751-320             VG++/NM- 10
   (1983. Andy Partridge, Anton Fier, David Lord as sidemen, oh yeah, also John Greaves. Slapp
    Happy guy lightens up, goes kinda dark-wave-sorta. Hollow early-80's sound, lotta syndrums
    and keys. Rather like the poppiest/dullest Phil Manzanera albums... but interesting lyrics
    all-throughout, and a couple of the songs are weird enough to rate higher.)
BLITZOIDS - Stealing From Helpless Children Mook (USA) 004 VG++/@VG++ 12
   (1987, Chicago band. Playful Zappa/RIO stuff, like a slightly weirder/punkier Rascal
    Reporters. Maybe some vague connection to post-rock TORTOISE kinda bands.)
BONFIRE - Bonfire Goes Bananas EMI (HOLL) EMI 50062-25163 VG+/NM- 30
   (1975. Dutch or Belgian band, symphonic-prog leaning heavily toward fusion with lots of guitar-
    hero bluesy/rockandroll leads. Guitarist really goes nuts in places -- at his best he sounds
    like Robert Fripp playing "I Heard Her Call My Name". Side two's pretty low-key.)
BRAND X - Unorthodox Behaviour                      Passport PPSD 98019                  VG+/VG++  4
  (W/insert.)
BUSKER - Impressions Of A City Pro Music Ltd. no # VG+/VG++ 60
   (1979, Canadian band? Multi-keyboards rock-band duo (plus guests) switch between weakly bluesy
    hard-rock/prog and Rick Wakeman worship with 'classical' moves. Has insert.)
JOE BYRD - Yankee Transcendoodle Takoma (USA) C-1051 stVG++/NM- 25
   (1976 oddity by ex-United States Of America/Joe Byrd & Field Hippies guy. Multi-synth versions
    of trad American music; marches and anthems and Quaker hymns & George M Cohan, etc... Style &
    technique are in the Tomita zone, quirkiness and listenability "vibe" equivalent to Bruce
    Haack, for me. I can't imagine ever listening to this again.)
CANO - Au Nord Du Notre Vie('77)                    A&M (CAN) SP 9028                   @VG+/stVG  3
CENTIPEDE - Septober Energy (2LP)                   RCA (USA) CPL2-5042              @VG+/VG++/NM 50
   (1971. Experimental big-band led by Keith Tippett, 50+ players in combinations of 3-4-5-6 or
    full ensemble. TOO ambitious, TOO diverse -- goes from high-energy screaming reed jabber to
    drone-y bits to funk-fusion... proggy-sounding bits with wordless vocals... Definitely would
    require repeated listening to map it out, but much of it is very very interesting, yes. Ref-
    erence point: Escalator Over The Hill. RW, as usual for this one.)
JEAN-LUC CHEVALIER - S/T                            Cryonic (FRA) MAD 3013                  NM/NM 20
   (1985. Former bass-player for Magma does low-key Euro-fusion. ECM textures, sprung-rhythm
    oddness... it's all in 13/8 and there's a lot of ingenuity being exercised, but it's not
    very dramatic in other respects. Some interesting guitar-work, though, and some occasional
    free-blowing bits. Dude, where's my zeuhl?)
BARRY CLEVELAND - Mythos Audion (USA) SYN 101 NM--/NM 10
   (1986, features two members of EMERALD WEB. Synth & acoustic instrument spaciness, delicate &
    inventive. Twenty-minute track on side two.)
CRUCIS - Los Delirios Del Mariscal RCA (ARG) AVS-4413 stVG+/VG- 20
   (1976. Four long tracks, multi-keyboard symphonic prog that for once (thank Gog) doesn't sound
    like identikit "symphonic" cliches. Maybe a little like Crimson, though. I didn't think I was
    ever gonna like a symphonic-prog record ever again, but... well... here we are. Fucking CRUCIS,
    man! PS: Amazing lead guitar. Looks super-scrubbed, plays mostly-okay ... except the two quiet
    passages on the record are buried in noise.)
DEROME/LUSSIER - Soyez Vigilants... Restez Vivants!
                                             Ambiances Magnetiques (CAN) 005           stVG++/NM- 15
   (1985-86, Montreal. Free-music duo working in a structured context; soundtrack and multimedia
    pieces with a proggy art/song flavor. Some of it's unclassifiable, some of it goes in a Zappa/
    RIO lotta-notes/weird-time-signatures/hyperactive bag. Has insert.)
DEROME/LUSSIER - Le Retour Des Granules         Ambiances Magnetiques (CAN) 006           VG++/NM 15
   (1987. As above, sometimes silly-playful-frivolous in a way the first one wasn't. Has insert.)
DRONA PARVA/ULTRASOUND - Songs Fm. Entopic Garden Vol. 1 Timelag Records 001 NEW 35
  (Volume One of a series paying homage to POPOL VUH. DRONA PARVA is a 1999 one-man project. Nemo
   Bidstrup. Hammond organ, oscillators, analog synth. ULTRASOUND are a four piece from Texas,
   1995/96. Longish neo-romantic piece mostly for piano and viola, then a shorter bit of ambient
   guitar sound. Audiophile pressing, 180 gram vinyl. LTD: 800.)
EARTHSTAR - French Skyline                          Sky (GER) 031                       VG++/VG++  9
  (1979. Two side-long suites of synthesizer and processed acoustic instruments. Side one is
   atmospheric and droney, side 2 has more actual musical content. Reminds me of some of the
   better VANGELIS albums... but not of the very best ones.)
EARWAX CONTROL - S/T                                Depot (USA) 005                        NM/NM- 12
   (1984. PAUL WERTICO/perc, JEFF CZECH/gtr & bass, GORDON JAMES/kbds. Playful, haphazard & silly
    jazz-flavored and not-jazz-flavored prog, feels like an early-seventies Robert Wyatt record.)
THE EDGE - The Captive (strk)                       Virgin (UK) V 2401                    NM/NM-- 10
   (1986, film soundtrack by U2's guitar-feller. Diverse blend of electronica and acoustic
    instruments, often quite atmospheric. Textures tend toward the ambient and the chamber
    music-y. Guest appearance by SINEAD OCONNOR. Never issued in USA.)
EKSEPTION - 00.04                            Phillips (UK) 6423019                         NM-/NM 15
  (1970. Well-known Dutch band; multi-keyboard jazz-fusion and classical-fusion, about 50/50.)
E Q ZAK - Premonition Of Reality             EQZ EQZ 1                                    VG++/NM 22
   (1988, New Jersey. Drifting pastoral/trance space music by guitar/synth/synth/vocals duo. Side
    two is their Dune Trilogy suite... set your controls for the heart of the mellotron. Wonderful
    acid-casualty cover art, too, coolest fetus I've seen all day.)
ESPERANTO - Danse Macabre                    A&M (USA) 3648                               VG+/VG+ 15
   (1974, WLP. Band originally known as Esperanto Rock Orchestra; I've forgotten whatever I once
    knew about them. Mostly violin & keyboard, tense Bartok-y RIO-textured weirdness, occasional
    soundtracky bits where their taste lapses into pastoral-prog bozo cliche. Produced by Pete
    Sinfield. COH)
FAUSTO - O Despertar Dos Alquimistas         CBS (PORT) 26486                             NM--/NM 25
   (1985. Unknown and unique prog band from Portugal. Very good 12 minute symphonic-prog epic,
    imitative of 19th century classical, nice 6 minute raga imitation... and the rest of the
    album is brilliantly executed AFROPOP, with sharp rhythms, captivating hooks... all sung
    in Portuguese. File under 'go figure.')
GANDALF - More Than Just A Seagull           Seagull Music (AUSTRIA) 04 1252            VG++/NM-- 12
    (1983. Slowly evolving electroacoustic ambient/drone; musique concrete, synth, acoustic &
     electric guitars... multi-instrumentalist one-man-show with a wide variety of instruments
     on hand. No vocals.)
MICHAEL GARRISON - In The Regions Of Sunreturn Windspell WS 112856 VG++/NM-- 12
   (1979, Oregon. Kraut-lovin' basement multi-keyboards one-man-band. Arp/Moog/sequencers.
    Songwriting a bit basic, but nice spacy atmosphere and texture.)
GOLDEN AVATAR - Change Of Heart Sudarshan SD 1 VG+/VG+ 3
JERRY GOODMAN - Ariel                       Private (USA) 2013-1-P                        VG++/NM  8
   (1986. Majestic symphonic-prog instro.s by ex FLOCK guy. Heavy on the keyboards, occasional
    guitar leads and violin add emotional depth.)
GWENDAL - S/T                               CBS (SPA) S 82064                          VG++/@VG++ 20
   (1978, Swirling, trippy prog-rock version of French trad-folk, jigs & reels and whatnot -- all
    instro. Alan Stivell connection of some kind? At the end of side two, they drop the trad stuff
    and go all-out proggy. It's folk-psych-trippy and challenging and odd and different. For 8
    minutes.)
DANIEL HAAS & YVES HASSELMANN - Couleurs Du Temps Crypto (FRA) ZAL 6468 NM-/NM 60
   (1978. Ex-Ange and ex-Travelling (yeah, me neither) get together for an acoustic guitar and
    archaic keyboards "symphonic" fest. Not very advanced in composition or playing, but it has
    its moments -- nice trance-out drifter at the end of side two.)
STEVE HACKETT - Cured Epic ARE 7632 promo stamp NM-/NM-- 3

HARMLESS - Deliver Us From Evil             Hell Yeah Rec.s HELLO2-1                        NM/NM  6
  (1991 or so, SF, CA I think. Out jazz, lounge music, sarcastic lyrics, chamber orchestra...
   Zappa comparisons are unavoidable, but it also reminded me of 'Le Marteau Sans Maitre' and
   'John Gavanti'.)
HARMONIUM - S/T                              Celebration (CAN) CAL 1893                 VG++/NM-- 25
   (1974. Pastoral, hippie art-music by a mostly-acoustic trio. Laid-back, melodic, occasion-
    ally a little jazzy... they don't make a point of showing off their chops, but they sure
    can play. Folk-psych sweetness and sunshine. Sung in French. With insert.)
STEVE HILLAGE  - Motivation Radio

   (1972. 65% prog, Canterbury style -- light, whimsical, jazzy, like Hatfield And The North.
    Hugely inventive and imaginative. 35% rural-rock/funky movement/message rock, straight-up
    good-timey communal hippie vibes for the brothers and sisters. Odd combination, wot?

   (1973. AOR pop-rock with some prog mannerisms, lots of advanced and very technical keyboard
    tickling. Kinda reminds me of Wigwam. Or Water.)
KAYAK - Starlight Dancer                      Janus Rec.s JSX 7034                          VG/VG  2

   (1977. Kinetic, thin-sounding rock/funk with soaring and swirling guitar and synthesizer solos,
    lots of nervous rhythmic energy. Different and good.)
DAGMAR KRAUSE - Supply And Demand Hannibal (USA?) HNBL 1317 NM/VG++ 12

   (1975, WLP. Deep-space electro-acoustic, very different from the kraut space/trance electronics
    of the time... synths, keyboards, computers, plus processed & unrecognizable input by San
    Francisco all-stars, incl. Phil Lesh, Jerry Garcia, Grace Slick, Spencer Dryden & David
    Crosby.)

  dissonance, out-there-ness and emphatic rhythms. Sleeve shows considerable wear at edges,
  disc has a few light marks.)

   (2003, Polish band... Richly rewarding ambient-industrial/neo-kraut-rock drone-prog. Guitar and
    bass pick out echoey, repetitive two and three-note patterns while clarinet and synthesizer
    hold a dialogue that sounds like whalesong. Beautifully realized, executed with so much depth
    and warmth... out of really simple materials they make something almost infinite. Numbered/LTD:
    350 copies. EXCITING FLASH UPDATE -- They played at Terrastock!)

   (1977. Basically instrumental (choral effects) flute & mellotron concept album about... um...
    faerieland. The trad-gaelic version, y'know. Exactly the kind ofprog some people scoff most
    heartily at. Ex-JULY, Mike Oldfield participation, seen as high as 180.00 USD.)
JAMES NEWTON - Axum                          ECM 1-1214                                     NM/NM  6
   (1981. Overtly neo-romantic solo action on flute & bass flute, all artfully overdubbed in layer
    upon layer to give you that lush cloud of melodic sound.)
NICK NACK - Albion                           Rot (USA) RR33-24                         stVG++/NM- 25

   (1987. Appears to be the complete movie, all 80+ minutes; musical interludes alternate with
    long stretches of dialogue. CD version (probably OOP) was only 38 minutes long... Music com-
    posed and performed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Koji Ueno, Yuji Nomi & Haruo Kubota, under the dir-
    ection of Ryuichi Sakamoto; MIDI-based minimal-synth with other sounds mixed in when approp-
    riate -- brass band, traditional music, rock and roll, etc. Insert but no obi.)

   (1982. Melodic AOR-prog; song-structures & production are very mainstream/80's-rock, but there's
    lots of creative, moody/trippy guitar soloing. Imagine Robert Fripp sitting in with Steve Mill-
    er Band. Now imagine that being GOOD.)
PINK FLOYD - Ummagumma (2LP)                 Harvest (ISR) SHDW 2                @VG++/stVG+/VG++ 40

    ing... but all the classic easternized textural and structural elements are still in place.)

   (1974. Keyboard-led prog-rock power-trio, is essentially The Nice with Patrick Moraz in place of
    Keith Emerson. When they do heavy, bombastic transcriptions of classical music, they SOUND like
    Nice or ELP, but most of the time they go off and do their own thing with notable originality
    and flair, hardly any proggist cliches in evidence.)
ROBOTOBIBOK - Nawyki Przyrody                 Obuh (POL) V-25                               NM/NM 30

   (2005, Fusion elements grafted onto a keyboard-heavy trance/space-prog structure. Intense, jazz-
    based drummer and some decent out-thinking saxophone. Vocals on three tracks, overall sound a
    bit like late CAN. #d/Ltd: 500.)

 (1986. French band, 3rd album. 2nd pressing? Melodic, baroque-tinged... like CAMEL, maybe...)

  (1979. Symphonic prog from Romania; many new twists on the old formula.)
YASUAKI SHIMIZU - Music For Commercials Crammed/Made To Measure (BEL) MTM 12 VG++/VG++ 8
   (1987. 24 short pieces of music written for... commercials. Attractive blend of eastern sounds,
    western orchestral instruments and synthesizer. Hits the same 'exotica-for-smart-people' place
    as the best Vangelis records.)
SOFT MACHINE - 4                              Columbia C 30754                         stVG++/NM-  5

    First record after Robert Wyatt left.)

Red Dog RD 0919 NM/NM 10 ON HOLD

   (1977. Soothing, enjoyable blend of folk-psych and pastoral prog. Doesn't "SOUND LIKE" early
    Harmonium, but they do the same general sort of thing.)
TRIUMVIRAT - Old Loves Die Hard EMI Electrola (GER) IC 062-29 622 @VG++/NM 12
   (1976. Keyboard-led symph-prog/AOR. Synths and instro textures are solidly symphonic, and quite
    attractive... but songwriting is kinda butt-rock... till they pull out all the stops for a
    high-drama ten-minute ELP-o-rama on side two.)
VANGELIS - Ignacio (strk/'77)                 Egg (FRA) BA-215                          VG++/@NM- 12
VIDEO AVENTURES - Musiques Pour Garcon Et Filles (10" LP) Recommended (UK) 8.7 VG++/NM- 20
   (1979. Gilbert Artman, post-LARD FREE -- Drily whimsical tinkertoy-mood minimal-synth/RIO, def-
    initely more UK-80's style than Euro-70's. Cover of Telstar stands out, and a longish avant-
    classical styled track on side two. Reminded me of Pascal Comelade. Read somewhere on line
    that this was LTD: 2500.)
LITO VITALE CUARTETO - La Senda Infinita Ciclo 3 (ARG) CPP 034 NM-/VG++ 10
   (1989. Luscious multi-keyboard new-age/symphonic-prog. Probably a bit over-ripe, but seductive
    nonetheless.)
WETTON/MANZANERA - S/T                        Geffen GHS 2414                             VG+/VG+  3

   (1985, all-female RIO from Quebec. Angular & spiky but very coherent, lotta horns. A bit simpler
    than the Art Bears, but approximately as interesting. Distinct Kurt Weill/cabaret damage.)
