(1982, Missouri. Homemade-look micropress by conscious-blackness artists on shortlived
conscious-blackness label; songwriter/AOR with some jazz moves -- vocals, piano and
acoustic bass. If I try to come up with something that it sounds like, I think of John
Martyn or Peter Hammill, and that isn't much help... but it's sorta vaguely like some-
thing along those lines. Kinda.)
ROY HAMILTON - With All My Love Epic BN 518 (S) VG+ 16
ISAAC HAYES -
CARL HOLMES & COMMANDERS - Twist Party At The Roundtable
Atlantic (USA) 8060 (MONO) NM-/VG++ 45

(Budget reissue from 1962 of 1957 original. Eight-piece band (I'm lazy, so no line-up), with
updated Quincy Jones arrangements of Louis' big 40's hits, now featuring rock-n-roll guitar
and honking sax. Caldonia, Choo-Choo Ch-Boogie, etc. 4" spl at spine.)
B B KING & CHARIOTEERS - Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

(Sixties reissue of early-60's Crown label session; two or three decent rockers. SHRINK.)
JACKIE LEE - The Duck Mirwood (USA) MW 7000 (MONO) VG/@VG+ 10
(WLP? Mirwoods usually had a blue label, I think; this one's white. Chunky dancepop/soul
w/Motown-ish groove. It's about a mover, but it starts to seem kinda one-dimensional and
samey after awhile. Dancing In The Streets, Do You Love Me, Land Of 1000 Dances... RSOC.)
LITTLE ANTHONY/IMPERIALS - Goin Out Of My Head DCP Int'l DCL 3808 (M) VG+/stVG+ 9

JOHNNY NASH - The Quiet Hour ABC-Par. ABC 276 (M) VG++/VG+ 14
JOHNNY NASH - Soul Folk JAD (USA) JS 1006 NM-/stVG+ 10

NEW JERSEY MASS CHOIR - Live At The Ritz (2LP) Savoy SGL 7086 VG+/NMx2 7

LOU RAWLS - Carryin' On! Capitol (USA) ST 2632 stVG++/@VG++ 10
(Mid-60's R&B; punchy, uptempo 'mod' dancers alternate with slower, blues-flavored
tunes. Big band-style horn charts, aggressively jazzy piano... Covers of "Yesterday"
and ... uh... something else worth making note of.Produced by DAVID AXELROD)
JAMES RAY - S/T Caprice 1002 (MONO) stVG++/NM- 60

JOHNNIE TAYLOR - Taylored In Silk Stax STS-3014 VG++/stVG+ 8
(1973, Muscle Shoals AL. Warm, bluesy southern soul, powerful groove.)
IRMA THOMAS - The New Rules Rounder 2046 NM--/NM 7
THREE DEGREES - S/T Philadelphia International KZ 32406 VG++/stVG++ 8
(1973, Gamble & Huff proto-disco with a funk-lite rhythm section and *** those strings***.
LP includes "When Will I See You Again", which I think was their one big hit.)
NEW!! 6/24 JOHNNY THUNDER - Loop De Loop Diamond (USA) D 5001 (MONO) VG+/VG++ 50
(Early soul with one foot still in the 50's -- appropriate blend of dancers, ballad & midtempo.
Maybe the nursery-rhyme gimmick is used a little too heavily, but the stylish vocals remind me
of a young Smokey. Teddy Vann produced.)
TOWER OF POWER - Bump City Warner BS 2616 (S) stVG++/VG++ 8
TYMES - Sounds Of The Wonderful Tymes Parkway (USA) P 7038 stVG++/stVG+ 25

Very rare.)

V/A - Copulatin' Blues Stash ST-101 NM/SS 12
(Issued in 1976, compilation of raunchy-lyric prewar blues. Bessie Smith, Lil Johnson,
Coot Grant, Tampa Red, Lucille Bogan, etc. "Shave 'Em Dry", "If I Can't Sell It (I'll
Keep Sittin' On It)" etc. )
V/A - Gus Gossert Collector's Album First Edition (10" lp)
Jukebox (USA) no number NM-/stVG++ 12
(Well-known 60's/70's NYC dj/archivist throws out some goldies... Flat zero in the way of
liner notes, but 12 tracks, presumably big-time rarities, incl. AVALONS, NOBLES, SHELLS,
LARKS, VERNALLS, SONICS, YOUNGTONES and others. "Crime Don't Pay" by Nobles
stands out -- singer robs a bank, gets arrested, tried and thrown in jail -- all in four-part
harmony with sound effects.)
V/A - The Hitter OST Capitol (USA) SW-11920 VG++/NM- 8
(1979, blaxploitation-type movie, couple years after the trend had subsided... Disco/funk
soundtrack with some album tracks (? or non-album?) by A Taste Of Honey, Maze and Gloria
Jones and a couple of originals by Garfeel Ruff.)
V/A - Lights Out: San Francisco (2LP) Blue Thumb VG+/NM--/VG+ 8
V/A - Original Rhythm & Blues Hits By R&B Stars Camden (USA) CAL 740 stVG+/VG+ 20
(1963 issue of early-50's tracks, originally on RCA's colored-vinyl first series of R&B 45.s.
Mostly straight-up postwar acoustic blues, with three ringers (boogie-woogie, jump-blues
instro, 1957 rock&roll&b...) Big Boy Crudup, Washboard Sam, Sonny Boy Williamson, etc. Nice
collection.)
V/A - Red White & Blues Rosetta (USA) RR1302. @VG++/NM 7
(Issued @1980, collection of blues-gals doing blues. Kinda haphazard selection,
tracks from 1927 to 1961. Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald aren't exactly ob-
scure, but at least there are three solid tracks from the 20's; those are nice
to have around. And the 30's tracks are pretty neat as well. 1" sspl.)
- Rock And Roll Dance Party Guest Star S 1406 stVG++/stVG 16
(F LYMON & TEENAGERS, others.)
V/A - Sun: The Roots Of Rock. Vol 1 Charly (UK) 30101 (MONO) VG++/@VG++ 12

A Witness, Please, Please, Please...)
