"White gospel" is at the bottom. Probably listed on C&W pages too, but it seems to make sense to have it here. I don't know.
ON 45
REV. JULIUS CHEEKS/FOUR KNIGHTS - Waiting/ Peacock (USA) 3030 stVG 5
(HOLLERIN' bluesy ballad b/w uptempo, hand-clapping rocker.)
ANDRAE (CROUCH) & DISCIPLES - Christian People/ Liberty 56201 @NM 5
(Early 70's chunka-chunka southern soul with funk underpinnings. Modern gospel, electrified and
funky, but with sweet vocals.)
JESSY DIXON - Hello Sunshine/You've Been So Good To Me Gospel (USA) 1131 stVG++ 8
(Chicago. Bluesy/soulful -- A-side is mostly chorus; lead is not very prominent. Not exactly a
rocker. B-side's much more of a solo performance, goes pretty deep. Soulful, yeah.)
FAMOUS WARD SINGERS - He's Watching Over You/ Savoy (USA) 4107 stVG 4
(A-side is tame and controlled but swings nicely, flip is a good deal wilder.
Almost hot.)
FIVE SINGING STARS - Jesus Is Using Me/ Peacock (USA) 1822 VG+ 5
(Rocker/ballad, both sides strong. Slight warp, NAP.)
GOSPELAIRES - Moving Up/ Peacock (USA) 1793 VG 4
(Male lead with mixed chorus -- kinda bland, but some crude loud drumming on
B-side...)
GOSPELAIRES - They Followed Jesus/ Peacock (USA) 1827 VG 4
(A bit deeper and more interesting than the other one.)
GRAY SIXTY - Home (Little Girl) Sweet Home/
Rowe-Ann RA-001 NM- 20 ON HOLD
(No date, Chicago label. PRIMITIVE down-home gospel, not really in the gospel/soul
style. Instro backing is a bit bland, but vocalist is electrifying in his
backwoods simplicity. "Weird-old America" Americana, a la American Anthology
or something John Fahey would have dug up.Unknown performer might not be black...)
EMMETT HOBSON - Mighty Man/
Hudspeth 447 VG/VG++ 60 ON HOLDF
(50's, private-issue, homemade Gospel rocker with four-piece combo. Picture
sleeve is 7x8.)
BROTHER JOE MAY & PILGRIM TRAVELLERS/ANNETTE MAY - Grow Closer/Vacation In Heaven
Specialty (USA) 895 VG- 3
(Deep ballad. Flip is a mid-tempo rhythm-thing with an unexpected saxophone.)
MADAME LOUISE REED - Show Some Sign/That's Enough Vee Jay (USA) 901 @NM 8
(Deep solo performance with piano & organ backing track, no group vocals. Flip's a bit livelier,
rocks some.)
NEW!! 2/1 ERNEST WALKER AND THE INSPIRALETTES - Thank Him/Meet Me In The Golden City
Jewel (USA) 146 VG++ 6
(Female lead, female group -- solid but average: A-side is deep and majestic, B-side is uptempo, with some FAST boogie-woogie piano.)
12" VINYL
DWAIN C CALVIN - You Can Have It All Tellit (USA) 68001 NM--/NM- 8
(1988. Elements of classic gospel updated to conform to the 1980's synthesizer/smooth
"neo R&B" style. Intriguing, not quite as bland as Lionell Richie. Looks pretty 'outsider',
but it's polished and professional.)
CELESTIAL CHOIR - Evangelistic Praise no label VG++/VG+ 5
(Toledo OH, probably early 70's. Pretty sedate, but it swings elegantly.)
INSTITUTIONAL RADIO CHOIR - Stretch Out Hob (USA) HOB 279 stVG++/@VG+ 12
(Sixties recording, awesome rockers & intense ballads, all very soulful, yes.
Choir from New Jersey.)
KANSAS CITY CHORAL ENSEMBLE - In Concert (no label) D 12995 stVG++/VG+ 4
(No date, prob. 1973-74. Disappointingly timid and funkless, mild r&b groove on a few songs only.)
NEW JERSEY MASS CHOIR - Live At The Ritz (2LP) Savoy SGL 7086 VG+/NMx2 7
(1984. Classic gospel sound with piano/organ/rhythm combo, large backing group,
and some really strong soloists. Really, REALLY strong. Three songs updated
with a bit of the thump-thump of disco, cover of "I Want To Know What Love Is.")
JIMMY WILLIS - The King's Highway Romeo ACLP 946 stVG++/VG+ 6
(Probably 1962-65 or thereabouts, California label. ex-Broadway/radio artist
found the Lord. Solo vocalist with piano/organ and acoustic guitar; occasional
bluesy feel, but overall closer to Paul Robeson than to Ray Charles.)
WHITE GOSPEL
on 45
NEW!! 7/17 BOB ROBIN TRIO - Sugar And Salt/Rock Rock Rock Jeb (USA) 101 VG+ 3
(Bland southern-accent Christian pop. Yes, both sides. Sorry. Bland, bland, bland. TX label.)
There are a TINY FEW MORE items of gospel music that I will get around to cataloguing SOME DAY... but really
and truly, I am not the person who's gonna meet your gospel-music needs. Not for the foreseeable future. Sorry.
