Salsa, merengue, tropical
On 45
LADY JANE - Si, Papi/Yo No Se Lady 10001 NM- 4
(1984.. Sultry Nuyorquino (?) salsa; strong rhythm section, good
songwriting, good vocalist with quite a head for sonera improv
vocals. Flip's a bit ballad-y and romanticizada, but it heats
up some for the last couple of choruses.)
PANCHO - Lero Lero/ Decca 50007 VG++ 5
(Very decent 50's latinalia,sounds like Sonora Matancera.)
TITO PUENTE - Mambo Tico TR EP 7 @VG+/VG+ 15
V/A - Sambas (2EP) RCA EPB 1073 NM--/all 15
On LP
LOS ANDINOS - La Nueva Imagen Coco (USA) CLP-145 VG++/VG++ 10
(1977. Jibaro-flavored set, rhythm section + guiro, no horns. Unusual use of handclaps,
distinctive in that way. Songlist includes a lot of aguinaldos/villancicos. Neat afro-carib
version of Amarga Navidad, by Jose Alfredo Jimenez.)
ALBERTO BELTRAN - El Unico Tropical (US) TRLP 5058 @VG++/stVG 6
(w/SONORA MATANCERA, others. Mostly boleros, some mambo & merengue. No
date. Looks like it might be a best of. Vibe similar to Santanera with
Daniel Santos, but a bit more varied and interesting. Sleeve in shrink,
but 1.5 " seamsplit, disc looks fairly clean but plays noisy.)
LINO BORGES - Exitos De L.B. Modiner (US) NG 229 @NM-/stVG+ 6
(No date, my guess is 64-66. Boleros/rancheras, Santanera-style orq., with
a more modern-sounding production and a baritone singer, stead o' their
usual high tenor.)
RENE CABEL/ORQUESTA RIVERSIDE - Cita Con Rene Cabel
Puchito MLP 568 (M) stVG++/VG++ 9
(Stodgy, heavily orchestrated boleros with a pompous baritone singer.
Doesn't swang at all, but it has its moments, there's a good version
of 'Nunca Nunca Nunca'...)
EDDIE CANO - Cano Plays Mancini Reprise (USA) RS-6068 NM/stVG++ 15
(Four-piece line-up: Fred Aguirre/drms, Leon Cardenas/bs, Carlos Mejia/congas. More lounge
than "latin-jazz", but a few tracks catch a rhythmic spark... Side two is a Mr. Lucky/Peter
Gunn suite; "sedate, safe crime-jazz"?)
NEW!! 8/11 SANTOS COLON - SANTITOS Y SU PUEBLO Fania (USA) 00462 NM-/NM 15
(1974, straight boleros. No credits for sidemen or anything like that. Still in shrink.)
LOS CORRALEROS (DE MAJAGUEZ)- Nuevo Tumbao
Discos Fuentes (COL) LP 200508 (MONO) stVG++/VG++ 35
(No date, probably 1968-69. Excellent proto-salsa tropical, reminds me a
bit of very early Gran Combo (Caballo Pelotero era), but with more
percussion. Future members of Fruko Y Sus Tesos.)
LOS DIPLOMATICOS - Bailables Discos Fuentes (US) 200189 (S) VG+/VG+ 8
(Half porros, half a mix of everything else. Uptempo instrumentals,
arrangements featuring electric guitar and cheesy 60's organ.)
LOS DIPLOMATICOS - Adoro Discos Fuentes 300420 (M) stVG+/VG++ 6
(Colombian pressing. Boleros/rancheras, similar arrangements. Bachelor
pad/lounge effect.)
LUIS GOMEZ - Rocio Tropical LD 1505 (M) VG++/VG++ 8
(Orq.s de MANUEL VILLANUEVA y de J NUNCIRA MACHADO. Colombian pressing.
Variety of rhythms; cumbia, paseo, paseito, plena etc. Typical too-tight
50's arrangements, but swings nicely.)
CHEITO GONZALEZ/TRIO CASINO DE SANTURCE - En Cristal
Boreal 226 (M) VG++/NM-- 12
(Light H20.)
EYDIE GORME/DANNY RIVERA - Muy Amigos Gala GALP 2007 stVG+/VG++ 7
NELSON HENRIQUEZ Y COMBO - Internacionalisimo
Audiorama (US) LP 609 NM-/VG++ 7
(Early 70's? Colombian band, possibly located in NYC. Straightforward
combo groove, no frills, no soloists, no virtuosity.)
EL INDIO DE BAYAMON - Navidades Alma 114 (M) @VG++/VG 4
(Evangelica. Nice guajira sound,but pretty boring...)
PEDRO (CONGA) LOPEZ - Cantando: Axel Martinez TH (USA) TR 157 VG+/@VG++ 3
(1984, salsa-romantica by old-school NY salseros. W/Cheo Feliciano,Andy Montanez...)
VIRGINIA LOPEZ - Azul Pintada De Azul RCA (MEX) MKL -1163 VG+/stVG 8
(Late 50's bolero session, P.R. singer with Mexican trio, former Tres Reyes members? Two tracks
with full orq. Noche De Ronda, Olvidame, a version in spanish of Volare... Slightly later
pressing, @ 1963-64.)
MACHITO And His Afro Cubans - Souvenir Album (10" LP)
Decca (USA) DL 5157 (MONO) VG+/VG 50
(1949, first lp issue of 1942 tracks. Serious hotness, epoch-making afro-latin sides. With
Mario Bauza, presumably with Chino Pozo and Tito Puente, apparently no English-speaking
jazzbos involved. 2" sspl at bottom right.)
ISMAEL MIRANDA - Exitos De Los 50 Fania JM 612 NM/@NM- 7
(1982. Boleros...)
YOLANDITA MONGE - A Star Is Shining Vol 2 Patty (PR) LLP-141 stVG++/@VG+ 12
(1970, 2nd LP by 17-18 year old who went on to a long career. Brassy,
Vegas-y ye-ye 'now generation' stuff, TV studio version of youth
culture... sorta reminds me of The Golddiggers.)
ORQ.ARAGON - Maracas, Bongos Y Congas RCA LPM 1609 (US) (M) VG+/VG? 8
NEW!! 6/14 ORQUESTA ARAGON - Cojale El Gusto A Cuba Discuba (USA) LPD-502 (MONO) VG++/VG+ 20
(No date, must be pre-revolution. Mostly cha-cha-chas, with a sprinkling of sones, danzones and
boleros. The sweet, 'high-class' charanga sound with the flutes and violins doesn't do much for
me, but I guess some people like it. "Separala Tambien" was a hot little number.)
ORQUESTA ARAGON - - Ultimos Exitos Discuba LPD 565 (M) stVG+/stVG++ 20
(lt.H2O on bc.)
ORQUESTA BROADWAY - Salvaje Coco CLP 119 @VG++/NM 10
(1975. Charanga line-up, sweet-ish sound with string section & lead
flute, good rhythm section. Same guys that went on to play in R Torres'
Charanga Vallenata, I think.)
ORQUESTA INTERNACIONAL - Mima La Pululera Mavi 008 sawm/SS 25
(1974, Pedro Conga's Orquesta Internacional. First ever recordings by
Tito Rojas, modern-day salsa-romantica superstar. Reissued on CD as
"Asi Empezo La Historia"... Pret-ty scarce.)
ORQUESTA LA CRIOLLA - Dos Bronco RLP 108 NM-/SS 15
(No date but 70's... Unknown quantity, can't dig up any info.)
ORQUESTA AMERICA - Cha Cha Cha, O.A. Vol II Panart (CUBA) 2008 VG/stVG+ 15
(Charanga-style beat smoothies, lotta flute & violin. Like Orquesta Aragon, but the rhythms are
a little sharper. SSPL, misc wear...)
ORQ. SINFONICA MARVELA - Album De Oro: Danzas De P.R.
Discos Marvela 34 stVG/stVG 8
(cantan: J M Campos (x6), Braulio Colon, Luis
Miranda, etc. Seam split.)
LOS PAJAROS - Mary, Otilia, Carmen, Gloria Ibersound (USA) IB-589 @VG+/NM 10
(Boogaloo-era afro-caribbean music, probably @ 1966-67... has some girl-group/ye-ye
overtones. Don't know where they're from.)
CHARLIE PALMIERI/DUBONEY ORCH - Let's Dance The Charanga!
United Artists (USA) UAS 6082 VG/VG++ 15
(1960. Black label 1st press, nice stereo original. His second LP as
leader (first was a jazz quartet session on Gone... find THAT one in
a hurry!) Fresher and more modern-sounding than most 50's combos, but
not wildly progressive. Not much soloing at all.)
EDDIE PALMIERI - Exploration ('78) Coco CLP 151 X (S) VG+/@NM 10
PEREZ PRADO - Big Hits RCA LSP 2104 NM-/stVG++ 10
(Late 50's hits collection with all the big ones: Cherry Blossom Pink,
Mambo #5, #8, Patricia...)
CARLOS PUEBLA - Soy Del Pueblo Discos Pueblo (MEX) DP 1042 VG+/VG++ 8
('78/'79. Cuba. Trad instrumentation, sones and guarachas. Lyrics kinda
slogany but the music's strong.)
CARLOS PUEBLA - Cuba, Songs For Our America
Paredon Rec.s (US) P-1018 NM/@VG++ 8
(1975. Less dance-inflected than above, and less jokey lyrics. 1975.
US press w/booklet.)
TITO PUENTE - Let's Cha Cha W/T.P. RCA LPM 1392 (M) @VG+/stVG 10
(Writing on label, ring-wear.)
TITO PUENTE - Holiday In San Juan
No label (TOURIST RECORD GUIDE) stVG++/stVG 8
(Odd one here, early-60's tourist-industry repackage of the Tito And His
Friends LP orig. issued on Seeco.. Mongo Santamaria & Ray Barretto in
band,sound is halfway between the classic Sonora Santanera 50's sound
and some of the livelier pop-sounding material I associate with Gran
Combo. Fancy package with gatefold and thick booklet bound in...)
JOE QUIJANO, RAY CRUZ, CONJUNTO CACHANA - La Salsa Se Impone
Cesta Nueva CESN-1001 VG++/NM- 35
(Scarce 1977 salsa Nuyorquina with Charlie Palmieri.)
EMILIO QUINONES - Besos Inolvidables Iberia Rec.s (US) 101 @VG/@VG 7
RULLI RENDO - Que Buena... Onda Tropical
Karrussell (MEX) LPM 12107 NM/stVG++ 6
(1977. Mexican cumbia/tropical outfit. Side one is popurri foolishness,
side two has actual songs, and a couple of very nice ones at that. La
Mujer Y La Gasolina is delightful, and Si Tu Te Vas is almost as
good...)
DANNY RIVERA - S/T (Mi Hijo) Velvet (US) LPVS 1450 (S) @VG++/VG 5
DANNY RIVERA - S/T (Dos Amantes) Velvet (US) LPVS 1461 (S) stVG++/VG 5
DANNY RIVERA - La Tierra Mia Velvet PRS 8004 VG+/VG+ 4
(1977. Sweet, heavily orchestrated, not much rhythmic content, some soul
influences.)
ISMAEL RIVERA - De Todas Maneras Rosas Tico (USA) JMTS 1514 VG++/stVG++ 8
(1977, mostly midtempo Fania-styled salsa. R. Blades & Adalberto
Santiago singing backup, didn't recognize any other names.)
SILVIO RODRIGUEZ - Dias Y Flores
Discos Bello (Dom. Rep.) LD 3467 VG+/@VG++ 10
(No date, mid-70's.)
S RODRIGUEZ/P MILANES - Cuba, Nueva Trova
Discos Pueblo (MEX) DP 1015 VG+/@VG+ 6
(No date, @1975? Singer-songwriter stuff with no obvious generic/
stylistic allegiances, no 'indigenous' content. Rodriguez is in
excellent voice this session.)
LOS RUMBEROS DE CUBA - S/T (10" LP) Tico TR LP 126 NM--/G+ 5
(Apparently from 1952, session musicians from NYC area. Pretty standard
set-list, 'Frenesi' etc... Record is sound overall, but last song on
side one has a skippy place. Sold AS IS.)
MARVIN SANTIAGO - Adentro TH (USA) 2148 stVG+/VG+ 5
(1981. Highly-regarded sonero, ex Cortijo & Bobby Valentin, made a couple of records as
leader during his 8 year prison sentence on drug charges. This one recorded during a live
show at Bayamon Penitentiary. 'Nostalgia' and 'Libertad' have all kindsa topical relevance,
moving songs...)
DANIEL SANTOS - Recordando A Javier Solis
Velvet (PERU) 1286 (M) stVG+/VG++ 15
SONORA VERACRUZ/TONO BARCELATA - S/T Maya (MEX) LY-70135 @VG+/@VG+ 12
(No date, 60's or late 50's. A little bit more rhythmic and exciting than the
usual super-urbane (dull) 50's sonero orquestas. Guaracha/guajira/pachanga,
only two slow tunes.)
ELADIO TORRES - Uno Can Records (PR) CILP 0100 (st) VG+/NM- 30
(1978, private issue pressed in P.R. by hugely talented songwriter/
arranger with a not-great voice. Terrific guajira instrumentation,
longish artyish songs... Orig. version of 'Alegoria', as good as the
more famous DANNY RIVERA version.)
TEDDY TRINIDAD - Moderno Y Sentimental
Dorado Records (US) DRM 1002 NM/SS 8
(P.R. singer. Boleros.)
V/A - Serie 16 Bailable Vol. 15 Tropical LD 1310 (M) VG+/VG++ 12
(GREAT 50's/60's anthology of hits. 11 artists - all Colombian - 16
songs. About equally divided between 1959 modern/urban orq. tropical
and raw-sounding vallenata, with a little uptempo 'trio-andino' thrown
in. Uniformly excellent record.)
MERENGUES
ALEX/ORQ LIBERACION - S/T Karen (US) KLP 89 VG+/NM- 3
BELKIS CONCEPCION - La Chica Del Mer. Kubaney (US) K-90001 (S) VG+/@VG++ 3
ORQUESTA MARINA DE GUERRA DOMINICANA - Aires Del Mar
Marina De Guerra Dominicana (SD) LP 1001 NM--/@VG++ 10
(No date, no info. Early 60's? Orq. has two guitars, bass, accordeon,
5 percussionists and 9 horns. Five boleros, 3 merengues, 1 boogaloo,
3 miscellaneous. 50's style, more "elegant" than "hot"... but the
merengues & boogaloos ain't bad.)
JOHNNY VENTURA - El Sr. Del Mer. CBS Int'l DIL 10440 (S) VG+/VG++ 3
HAITI
LEON DIMANCHE - Une Voix Mini (US) MRS 1043 @VG+/NM- 8
(1974. All ballads, with one africanesque/creole rhythm number at end
of side two. Small electric combo, often has a jazzy/bluesy feel,
lots of electric guitar.)
